| Captain James McFarlane was the leader of the 500 + anti-Federalists who went to Bower Hill (General Neville's home) on July 17, 1794, to demand Neville's resignation and tax records. Neville was not present that morning (to quiet the crowd, perhaps, by not being seen). We wonder if Neville and U S Marshal David Lenox did not take refuge at St. Luke's Church. Someone fired the shot that day that did mortally wound MacFarlane, and the crowd became a mob and burned Bower Hill down. It is not wrong to imagine that MacFarlane and the other anti-Federalists focused their anger on Neville. ...Canon Richard Davies |
